The Royal Conservatory

The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) offers graded examinations for students. Part of the University of Toronto from 1886 to 1991, it is one of the largest and most respected music schools in North America.

The RCM agenda includes:

  • Repertoire, all major periods
  • Studies
  • Technique
  • Sight-Playing
  • Ear-Training
  • Theory

The Royal Conservatory encompasses strict guidelines for ten grade levels. The ARCT diploma for Teachers or Performers is the culmination of all the grades, recognized worldwide.

Many Canadian provinces recognize completion of higher levels of the RCM curriculum, awarding students high school credits for them.

RCM Examinations conducts examinations three times each year across Canada through a network of Examination Centres. Kingston, Ontario, is an Examination Centre.
